Does Abortion Affect Mental Health?

December 7th, 2008

A lot of people have said that abortion isn’t really much of anything, classifying it as a ‘non-event’ in a woman’s life. However, more studies continue to shed light on the issue and indicate that it is indeed a very serious event, even if the woman in question doesn’t seem to think much of it at the time.

She will have a statistically higher chance of having mental health disorders and problems in the future. There have been a lot of studies done in the past, and two have been published just this month that show the same result. This raises important issues for informed consent, because doctors now talk to women about the physical dangers of abortion but they often overlook the mental dangers.

Not all women will be affected in this way, of course, but the strong possibility of it is something that should be addressed so that women are aware of any adverse effects they may experience, even years later. A lot of women are now coming forward with tales of how past abortions have affected the quality of their lives today.
