Dining Out While Dieting

August 19th, 2009

dining-out-dietI’m going to be honest with you – I’m not into cooking. The McDonald’s drive-thru window might be one of my favorite places. It is fast, convenient, and I am happy with the food I get. However, it is not always the best for my diet. Although, if you must eat out, there are ways to do so and still maintain a healthy diet. Here are some suggestions.

-If the restaurant offers an appetizer menu, order from it. Or, try ordering a side salad.

-Avoid too much pasta and try to only eat one entrée.

-It is easy to think, “I am eating protein, I’m ok.” However, fried chicken is not always healthy. Try a grilled, leaner option when you are dieting.

-Try asking the restaurant to boil something rather than frying it to cut down on the calories.

-Sauces and condiments add calories so be careful.

-Try to eat half the meal and take the rest home.

-Do you research before you go to a restaurant so you know what the healthiest options are and you can pick the best choice for you.

-Avoid buffets because you will just overeat.

Everyone will ultimately have to eat out at some point while dieting. It is possible to find a healthy option and still enjoy your experience.

Which Weight Loss Program is the Most Affordable?

May 3rd, 2009

weight loss programsFor people who want to lose weight in the Spring or anytime, there are a lot of options. Some people just eat less and exercise more, but other people need more than that, and they join a weight loss program. Some of these can be quite costly, and a lot of people are struggling with the economy today, so they want to join a weight loss program that they can easily afford.

The most affordable of the weight loss programs is NutriSystem. Both Forbes and the National Business Research Institute have made this claim. Some of the other weight loss programs were hundreds of dollars more expensive than the NutriSystem option. One of the main advantages of the plan is that there aren’t any membership or other fees, and with free online and telephone counseling it’s hard to beat the opportunities for success.

The plan is said to cost less than what a person would typically spend on ‘regular’ food during that same time period, which is also very significant, because people can lose weight more cheaply than they would be trying to do it on their own.

Weight Loss Tops Resolutions Again

January 7th, 2009

Every New Year people make countless resolutions, and every New Year most of them are broken in just a few days – some of them in just a few hours. Popular resolutions involve quitting smoking and getting a better job, but the number one New Year’s resolution again this year is weight loss.

Almost everyone, especially women, feel as though they should lose some weight. It might be five or ten pounds, or it might be much more than that, but it’s an important goal for a lot of people. It’s unfortunate that a lot of them won’t succeed. Their willpower might not be strong enough or they just might not be ready to make the kind of commitment necessary to lose weight.

For those who are ready, however, losing weight can be a significant goal in the New Year, and can make them look and feel much better than they did in years past. People who decide that they should lose weight in the New Year generally want to do so, and all they need to do is make the commitment for their health and their happiness.

Green tea and Hoodia

December 8th, 2008

Taking Hoodia everyday to lose weight is very popular among people who are randomly gaining weight due to their uncontrolled eating habits. There is little or no research done on the effectiveness of the Hoodia when used in combination with other supplements and thus to be on the safer side it is always best to go with a very mild usage.

This is what many people have started doing and mixing Green tea with Hoodia Gordonii is becoming very getting very popular. It is believed that this combination is very useful at the same time in increasing the effects on your weight.

Green tea helps in burning fat but this is also well known scientifically that it reduces the pace in which blood sugar level is formed. This is the basic reason why hypothalamus is not informed that we are full and we feel hungry again, even if we have had a balanced diet biologically.

It is very well know that we should not take chances when health is concerned and it is always best to be cautious as we all are aware of the fact that prevention is better than cure. Thus, using Hoodia with green tea might be very productive and useful in controlling hunger but it is better to be safe and not use it much until the scientific results are out after proper researches are done.

Formation of glucose is controlled and the process of formation of blood sugars as well is reduced by green tea. Its blood sugar level which is responsible for informing the brain that one has had enough food but if that is manipulated by the in take of green tea which reduces the pace of digestive system, we still feel hungry and end up over eating.

There are many combinations which might end up being deadly where health is concerned, though our way of thinking and logical point of view might direct us the other way. It is a clear example that one can not consume nerves stimulant along with the nerves relaxant.

Thus, Hoodia which in its real sense will help in informing the hypothalamus that one has had enough food, even if that might not be the actual case, is actually a hunger suppressant. It helps in controlling the hunger as well as makes you feel less inclined towards munching all the time.

Thus, we can say that the combination of green tea and Hoodia with both of them having exactly opposite functions individually as well as different reactions on the body must be taken together in a very moderate quantity and its better to be on safer side. However, it is also known that if the combination has not helped in gaining positive result, at least it does not have any negative side effects as well.

Change Your Diet for a Facelift

December 4th, 2008

If you want a facelift because you aren’t happy with the way your skin looks, you might not have to go to that extreme. Instead, you might be able to improve the way you look by changing your diet. Some foods are much better for you than others, and some of them are also much better for your skin. If you partake of those more often you could improve your skin over time.

One of the most popular of the skin enhancing diets is the Perricone Diet. This diet is designed for weight loss, but there is also a three-day period at the start of it where you eat fruits, berries and yogurt, can only drink water or green tea, and must eat salmon twice a day.

These kinds of things and their combination are important for a person’s skin, and this three day diet can make a significant difference by helping to flush the toxins from your body. That will help with younger-looking and more supple skin.

Safety Risks of a High Protein Diet

November 11th, 2008

High protein diets are sometimes popular with bodybuilders, and they are also sometimes used by people who are trying to lose weight. The risks that individuals take when they eat a high protein diet, though, have been much discussed.

The American Heart Association and others have talked about these kinds of diets for some time, and they have come to the conclusion that they are not a very good idea for overall health. They are usually safe for a short period of time to build muscle mass or to lose weight, but they aren’t something that people should just stay on for the long term.

If you stay on this diet too long you can get gout, which is a type of arthritis, and you can also see a higher risk of problems like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease because you aren’t getting the complex carbohydrates that actually help to protect you against these kinds of diseases. You can also raise your blood pressure and suffer from kidney failure, so be very careful about how long you stay on these kinds of diets.

What You Might Not Know About Your Cookies! (Eat At Your Own Risk)

November 3rd, 2008

Did you know, when you eat cookies, that you are, more than likely, eating palm oil? No? You probably didn’t. Most people don’t, so don’t beat yourself up about it. Unfortunately, palm oil is bad news – both for you and for orangutans all the way over in Indonesia. It harms your health, the animals, and the environment, all at the same time.

According to many reports, orangutans are ‘dying for cookies,’ and not in the way sugar-starved dieters do. They’re literally dying because the palm oil plantations that are needed to make cookies, biofuel and other products that contain the oil are destroying the Indonesia and other areas that the orangutans call home. Crackers, cereals, pastries, and microwave popcorn are all guilty, as are companies like Oreo, Pepperidge Farm, Keebler, Mrs. Fields and many others.

One of the sneaky ways that palm oil shows up in foods is by making you feel better in other ways. You see your favorite snack food there on the shelf. In big, bold letters it proclaims that it now has 0 grams of trans fat! You feel better about eating it, but have you ever looked to see what else might have changed? If the trans fat went away, what else moved in to take its place? Palm oil, which is saturated fat, which is basically just as bad for you, especially in large amounts.

About sixty percent of the palm oil in the world is produced by Malaysia. This is important, because Malaysia doesn’t like the United States telling people that palm oil is bad for them. The country doesn’t want it listed as a saturated fat anymore. They think it’s being ‘lumped in’ with other oils that are worse to eat and being unfairly treated, mostly by the soybean growers.

While palm oil may have its place in some foods and other items, the majority of it is only there because of the push to remove unhealthy trans fat from many staples of the average American diet. However, since palm oil is actually not really any healthier, there is nothing being gained by people who eat it and everything being lost by the animals and plants that formerly lived where clearing is taking place to build palm oil processing and harvesting facilities.

A lot of orangutans are feeling the pain of the way that industry is changing and the demands that are being placed on the individuals who must provide palm oil and other items for human needs. There are Websites where people can donate to the cause of these poor animals and where they can stay updated on the continued efforts to ensure that no more orangutans are harmed and there is no further destruction of the environment.

Palm oil is found in most margarine, shortening, potato chips, cooking oil, soups, sauces, crackers, baked goods, and confectionery products as well as biofuel, lubricants, detergents, soaps, and cosmetics including lipstick, makeup remover, body lotion, and sun cream. Most people don’t realize how much palm oil they use or ingest over the course of their lifetimes and how unhealthy it is for all involved. There are some places in the world where elephants are being used for slave labor on palm oil plantations. If they are not needed for that, they are simply killed because they are in the way of progress. By 2020, it is believed that the need for palm oil will double and that means that 1,160 square miles of new crops will have to be planted – and land will have to be cleared and habitats destroyed to do this.

So many rainforests are being destroyed, and the chief reason for that is economics. People want the items that palm oil is used in and for, so there is a strong market for the substance. This desire to make money is clearly going to supersede any concerns that these companies have about the environment or the people who purchase their products.

Lose More Weight- Useful Tips About Dieting

October 22nd, 2008

Advice about dieting can come from many different directions at once. How do you sort out the good advice from the bad?

Laughingly, many believe that celery and chewing sugar-free gum can burn calories. Give your mouth a rest and get your body moving instead. Studies from prestigious organizations like the Mayo Clinic have debunked the “negative-calorie” myth that has upheld the gum and celery whispers.

Coffee, on the other hand, can rev up your metabolism significantly. Two cups of coffee, for instance, can cause the female body to expend 50 extra calories (in a 145 pound woman). Be careful though: sugar, cream and milk lessens the metabolic effect of black coffee because it can cause insulin levels to rise.

Eating after 8 p.m. may or may not cause increased body fat. Caloric intake throughout the day determines what happens when that late-night snake is consumed. Be careful to not overeat at night, however, if your day meals are light. This will reverse any beneficial effect.

Exercising on an empty stomach can burn more fat, but a better workout awaits if one eats a good meal beforehand. University of Ottawa researchers asked test subjects to treadmill until 400 calories were eliminated. While those who skipped breakfast burned 58 percent more fat, although fasting doesn’t always turn into significant weight loss.

Fact Or Fiction: Soy Can Affect Male Fertility

October 15th, 2008

A new, small study has shown that men who consume soy every couple of days have lower sperm counts than men who don’t eat soy. However, there is a debate about this study because Asian men, who traditionally eat a great deal of soy, do not appear to have any problems with their fertility. They have been having children with no difficulty for some time.

Those who refute this most recent study say that the reason for the differences in the sperm count must be attributed to some other factor, such as the high rate of obesity in Western men and normal variations in sperm counts that are seen in men.

More studies are needed to determine whether soy really affects fertility or if the lower sperm counts come from something else.
