The Low Down on Flu Shots

February 18th, 2009

Every year, local news programs talk about getting a flu shot and your doctor’s office offers you one. Many pharmacies and clinics also offer them, sometimes for free for people who don’t have a lot of money. But do you need one?

Most doctors say yes, but more and more research is starting to show that the flu shot might not be the best choice, at least for some people. While it’s designed to protect you, it contains things like mercury, formaldehyde, ethylene glycol, aluminum, and MSG. Those don’t sound very natural or very protective, and that’s what has some people worried. If you’re at serious risk of the flu because of your job, if you’re elderly, or if you have trouble with your immune system you might still want to get a flu shot, but most healthy people probably don’t need one.

Taking care of yourself by exercising and eating well, getting enough sleep, and keeping yourself emotionally and spiritually balanced, as well as practicing extra-good hand washing and hygiene during flu season is often enough to keep the flu at bay.

A Healthier Choice for Valentine’s Day

February 11th, 2009

If you’re looking forward to sharing Valentine’s Day with someone special but you don’t want to ruin your diet by eating all that chocolate, there are healthier alternatives that you can really enjoy.

A lot of fruits and vegetables have been proven to have compounds in them which put people in the mood for love. By incorporating them into a home-cooked, romantic dinner, it’s more likely that the sparks will fly. Avocadoes, almonds, and strawberries are some of the best choices, and they are all great foods that can easily be added to the menu without a lot of difficult planning and preparation.

Citrus fruit, figs, and seafood can also have the same kind of stimulatory effect, helping couples to enjoy their romantic time together even more than they otherwise would. These aren’t gimmicky foods that are supposed to enhance sexuality and don’t really do anything. They are proven to have compounds and minerals and vitamins in them that can help stimulate the body. They are also good for you, so if you’re trying to lose a little weight or be healthier overall, that’s another added benefit.

Three Degrees of Happiness?

January 26th, 2009

Researchers are finding that happiness is contagious. That might or might not come as a surprise to you, but apparently science has shown it to be true now.

People who are happy often spread that happiness to others. If a parent is happy, that spreads to his or her children, spouse, and other relatives whom he or she is close to. That’s not all that the scientists discovered, though. They also found that this happiness may have more of an affect than previously thought. If you’re happy, the people closest to you can catch that. The good news is they can also take that with them, and they will pass it on to the people who they are closest to like their friends, their family members, and the people who they work with.

At this rate, there are three degrees of happiness, and could potentially be more, depending on how one looks at it. While one happy person can’t cheer up the planet, he or she can cheer up those close by, and those people can pass it on to others, who can also pass it on.

Weight Loss Tops Resolutions Again

January 7th, 2009

Every New Year people make countless resolutions, and every New Year most of them are broken in just a few days – some of them in just a few hours. Popular resolutions involve quitting smoking and getting a better job, but the number one New Year’s resolution again this year is weight loss.

Almost everyone, especially women, feel as though they should lose some weight. It might be five or ten pounds, or it might be much more than that, but it’s an important goal for a lot of people. It’s unfortunate that a lot of them won’t succeed. Their willpower might not be strong enough or they just might not be ready to make the kind of commitment necessary to lose weight.

For those who are ready, however, losing weight can be a significant goal in the New Year, and can make them look and feel much better than they did in years past. People who decide that they should lose weight in the New Year generally want to do so, and all they need to do is make the commitment for their health and their happiness.

Surviving Your New Year’s Fitness Resolutions

December 31st, 2008

Personal trainers and gym owners across the country have BIG smiles on their faces right now.

Because they know they’re about to get flooded with average folk making New Year’s Resolutions to drop that extra 20 pounds and finally get fit.

And they ALSO know that the vast majority of these new signups will show up for about a month and then disappear forever. Or at least until next year.

Now don’t get me wrong. I love goal-setting (when it works) and I like the idea of making plans to get in shape for the new year if it gives you a boost of energy and motivation.

So how can we set fitness goals for the year and actually stick to them? And ACCOMPLISH them?

Here’s 5 things successful goal-setters do that quitters don’t do:

1. Keep your goals PRIVATE.

The last thing you want is for the wrong person to find out that you want to improve your diet or take a few inches off your waistline. Because he or she will try to bring you down with negativity and get in the way of you developing new and good habits. Don’t even give them the chance.

2. Figure out WHY you want to accomplish your goal.

If you want to drop 20 extra pounds…think about why. And don’t think this is obvious stuff either. What you need to know is what personally motivates you and gets you emotionally involved. Is it because you want to look better? Have more energy? Attract a new mate? Re-attract and old one? Figure it out.

3. Use this reason to keep you going when things get rough.

Whenever you feel like giving up or taking it easy after a couple months have gone by and your goals lose their luster, remember your reason for making the resolution in the first place. Focus on that and your fire will reignite

4. Get around likeminded people.

This means avoiding your friends who overeat if you want to clean up your diet. And getting around active people if you want to exercise more. Like it or not, it’s a lot harder to accomplish something alone.

5. If you stumble a bit, shrug it off.

Don’t worry if you fall back into your old habits for a week. If you miss a couple workout sessions, don’t waste time feeling bad. Just get started again and treat it as a learning experience. If you eat bad for a week or two, pouting won’t do any good. Just laugh it off and get started again.

Arm yourself with these five strategies and you’ll get halfway through 2009, look back, and realize you’ve transformed your body for the better.

Ensuring a Healthy New Year: 7 Tips to Last for Life

December 30th, 2008

The new year is a time for renewal and the perfect opportunity to alter past habits. Here are 10 pointers from high-profile experts in Israel, who suggest you say goodbye to elements in your life that are holding you back from doing what you’ve wanted to do for years.

1) Regular checkups are integral to a new lifestyle.

2) Ensuring against colon/rectal cancer by undergoing a colonoscopy every ten years is a great idea. Of course, you don’t really need to do that until you hit the wizened age of 50.

3) Regular checkups, perhaps more than any of the other items here, can be a valuable method of meeting potential health issues head on.

4) Something as simple as washing your hands with soap can go a long way as well.

5) Perhaps just as important is the flu vaccination. Despite negative opinion of the vaccination procedure, it’s safe to use, does not cause heart attacks and is in fact given to millions of people across the world.

6) Back injury can strike when you least expect it. Simply don’t lift with your back; lift with your knees when moving heavy loads instead.

Lastly, if pain does come, don’t ignore it. The only way you’re going to know if something is wrong is through pain; headaches might indicate another problem, possibly highlighting damage to the brain or eyes.

Top Reasons For Fatigue In Women

December 20th, 2008

Unexplained fatigue is the unspoken global energy crisis.

“The single biggest complaint I hear from my patients, day in and day out, is fatigue,” says Nieca Goldberg, MD, a cardiologist at the Director of the NYU Medical Center Women’s Heart Program and associate professor at the NYU School of Medicine.

While multitasking and not getting enough sleep is certainly part of the problem, there are other factors that might be contributing.

A Slowed Thyroid

“I believe the undiagnosed thyroid disorder is one of the major female health problems in this country. I think it is even more widespread than anyone realizes,” Dr. Goldberg says.

Caffeine Overload

While caffeine has been the miracle worker for deadlines many a time, it can also be the culprit for slowing us down too.

“In some patients, continued abuse results in fatigue,” according to W. Stephen Pray, PhD, RPh. “Any attempts to solve the problem by increasing caffeine intake causes the fatigue to worsen.

Still Exhausted?

While heart disease can cause this fatigue, it’s not the first sign and the heart’s condition ‘is usually linked to something far less serious.”

In layman terms, it fools your brain and passes the message that you are full but actually you are not. This deceptive effect produced by hoodia is considered by most people as weight loss miracle.

Green tea and Hoodia

December 8th, 2008

Taking Hoodia everyday to lose weight is very popular among people who are randomly gaining weight due to their uncontrolled eating habits. There is little or no research done on the effectiveness of the Hoodia when used in combination with other supplements and thus to be on the safer side it is always best to go with a very mild usage.

This is what many people have started doing and mixing Green tea with Hoodia Gordonii is becoming very getting very popular. It is believed that this combination is very useful at the same time in increasing the effects on your weight.

Green tea helps in burning fat but this is also well known scientifically that it reduces the pace in which blood sugar level is formed. This is the basic reason why hypothalamus is not informed that we are full and we feel hungry again, even if we have had a balanced diet biologically.

It is very well know that we should not take chances when health is concerned and it is always best to be cautious as we all are aware of the fact that prevention is better than cure. Thus, using Hoodia with green tea might be very productive and useful in controlling hunger but it is better to be safe and not use it much until the scientific results are out after proper researches are done.

Formation of glucose is controlled and the process of formation of blood sugars as well is reduced by green tea. Its blood sugar level which is responsible for informing the brain that one has had enough food but if that is manipulated by the in take of green tea which reduces the pace of digestive system, we still feel hungry and end up over eating.

There are many combinations which might end up being deadly where health is concerned, though our way of thinking and logical point of view might direct us the other way. It is a clear example that one can not consume nerves stimulant along with the nerves relaxant.

Thus, Hoodia which in its real sense will help in informing the hypothalamus that one has had enough food, even if that might not be the actual case, is actually a hunger suppressant. It helps in controlling the hunger as well as makes you feel less inclined towards munching all the time.

Thus, we can say that the combination of green tea and Hoodia with both of them having exactly opposite functions individually as well as different reactions on the body must be taken together in a very moderate quantity and its better to be on safer side. However, it is also known that if the combination has not helped in gaining positive result, at least it does not have any negative side effects as well.

Does Abortion Affect Mental Health?

December 7th, 2008

A lot of people have said that abortion isn’t really much of anything, classifying it as a ‘non-event’ in a woman’s life. However, more studies continue to shed light on the issue and indicate that it is indeed a very serious event, even if the woman in question doesn’t seem to think much of it at the time.

She will have a statistically higher chance of having mental health disorders and problems in the future. There have been a lot of studies done in the past, and two have been published just this month that show the same result. This raises important issues for informed consent, because doctors now talk to women about the physical dangers of abortion but they often overlook the mental dangers.

Not all women will be affected in this way, of course, but the strong possibility of it is something that should be addressed so that women are aware of any adverse effects they may experience, even years later. A lot of women are now coming forward with tales of how past abortions have affected the quality of their lives today.
